Ascendis slides as Novo rights revert and execution risk grows
Shares in Ascendis Pharma (ASND) fell 6.1 per cent after the company said it would take back full rights to its metabolic and cardiovascular programs following the end of its collaboration with Novo Nordisk (NVO).
All rights to products based on Ascendis's TransCon technology in those areas will revert to the group, including once-monthly TransCon semaglutide. The company said it plans to start multiple programs in obesity and type 2 diabetes, pointing to a broader and potentially more capital-intensive development path than the partnership implied.
Ascendis also announced a share repurchase program of up to $400mn. The move is friendly to shareholders but appears not to have been enough to ease concerns about strategy and execution, with investors focused on the longer timelines and the funding burden of advancing the assets without a partner.
An analyst downgrade followed the announcement, suggesting some on Wall Street see the change in the partnership as raising risk, even if the long-term opportunity in the assets remains intact.
