What should I know about Johnson & Johnson?

Johnson & Johnson (J&J) is a US healthcare company based in New Brunswick, New Jersey, with a 140-year history. It has two business segments: Innovative Medicine (prescription drugs) and MedTech (medical devices). Innovative Medicine focuses on immunology, oncology, neuroscience, infectious diseases, pulmonary hypertension, and cardiovascular and metabolic disease. MedTech covers orthopaedics, surgery, cardiovascular and vision products. J&J reported second-quarter 2026 sales of $25.3 billion and says it is on track to pass $100 billion in annual revenue for the first time this year.

What are Johnson & Johnson's main drugs?

J&J's top-selling medicine is Darzalex, a treatment for multiple myeloma (a blood cancer) that earned $14.4 billion in 2025, about 15% of company revenue. Other major products in 2025, according to its annual report, were Stelara ($6.1 billion, down 41% as cheaper biosimilar versions arrived), Tremfya for psoriasis and bowel disease ($5.2 billion), the Invega long-acting antipsychotic injections ($3.8 billion), the prostate cancer drug Erleada ($3.6 billion), the CAR-T cell therapy Carvykti ($1.9 billion) and the antidepressant Spravato ($1.7 billion). Innovative Medicine sales totalled $60.4 billion in 2025. J&J's MedTech division adds surgical, orthopaedic, cardiovascular and eye-care devices.

What is Johnson & Johnson currently developing?

J&J has launched several new medicines recently. In 2025 the FDA approved Imaavy (nipocalimab) for generalised myasthenia gravis and Inlexzo, a drug-releasing system for bladder cancer. In 2026 it approved Icotyde (icotrokinra), an oral IL-23 blocker for moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis. Icotrokinra is also in Phase 3 trials for ulcerative colitis and psoriatic arthritis. J&J expects a possible FDA decision on Imaavy for warm autoimmune haemolytic anaemia later in 2026, and nipocalimab also reduced lupus disease activity in a Phase 2 study. Another candidate, JNJ-4804, is in Phase 3 for bowel disease.

Have there been any controversies involving Johnson & Johnson?

J&J's biggest controversy is its talc litigation. The company says its talc products are safe, contain no asbestos and do not cause cancer, but it faces claims from more than 67,000 plaintiffs and stopped selling talc baby powder worldwide in 2023. Courts have thrown out three attempts to resolve the claims through bankruptcy, the latest in March 2025. Juries have since awarded large sums, including $966 million in October 2025 and $1.5 billion in December 2025, which J&J is appealing. J&J also joined a $26 billion national opioid settlement in 2021 and paid $2.2 billion in 2013 over its marketing of Risperdal and two other drugs.

Is Johnson & Johnson publicly traded, and how big is it?

Yes. J&J trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker JNJ. Its market value was about $640 billion in mid-September 2026, placing it among the world's largest healthcare companies. In July 2026 it raised its full-year forecast and now expects 2026 sales of about $101.1 billion, up 7.3% at the midpoint. Innovative Medicine accounted for $60.4 billion of its sales in 2025, with the rest coming from MedTech.
