What should I know about AbbVie?

AbbVie is a US biopharmaceutical company based in North Chicago, Illinois. It separated from Abbott Laboratories on 1 January 2013, when Abbott shareholders received one AbbVie share for each Abbott share. It develops medicines for immune-mediated diseases, neurological conditions such as Parkinson's disease, cancer and other conditions. AbbVie acquired Allergan in 2020, which added Botox. In the second quarter of 2026 it reported net revenues of nearly $17 billion, up 10.2% on a year earlier.

What are AbbVie's main drugs?

AbbVie's two biggest products are now the immunology drugs Skyrizi and Rinvoq. In the second quarter of 2026, Skyrizi earned $5.5 billion (up 24%) and Rinvoq over $2.5 billion (up 23.7%). Humira, once the world's top-selling drug, fell 36.1% to $756 million as cheaper biosimilar versions took market share. Other important products include Vraylar for psychiatric conditions (nearly $1.1 billion), Botox, and Vyalev for Parkinson's disease ($256 million). AbbVie raised its 2026 revenue forecast by $300 million to about $67.6 billion.

What is AbbVie currently developing?

AbbVie said in July 2026 that it expected an FDA decision on tavapadon, a Parkinson's disease treatment for motor symptoms, in the third quarter of 2026. It also expects approval of a subcutaneous induction dose of Skyrizi for Crohn's disease in autumn 2026. Rinvoq has been approved in Europe for vitiligo and alopecia areata (two conditions that cause patchy skin or hair loss), with US decisions expected later in 2026 and early 2027. The company is extending Skyrizi and Rinvoq into further conditions as Humira sales decline.

Have there been any controversies involving AbbVie?

AbbVie's Humira patent strategy drew an antitrust lawsuit. Plaintiffs alleged it built a "patent thicket" of dozens of follow-on patents and settled with rivals to keep biosimilars off the US market until 2023. In June 2020 a federal judge dismissed the case, finding that AbbVie had used lawful practices, and AbbVie later won on appeal. In July 2022 Allergan, which AbbVie now owns, agreed to pay up to $2.37 billion to US states and local governments over claims about its marketing of opioid painkillers.

Is AbbVie publicly traded, and how big is it?

Yes. AbbVie trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker ABBV. Its market value was about $386 billion on 30 August 2026, about 10% below its 52-week high. It reported net revenues of nearly $17 billion in the second quarter of 2026 and expects roughly $67.6 billion for the full year. That puts it among the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world by revenue.
